Iot- Internet of Things

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) has been dated as early as the 1980s & 1990s.

Today, it has become omnipresent in the world of & beyond the internet!

Every day, new development is being added to the technology making it stronger & better. Now, before discussing the current status along with future prospects of IoT, we must give you a brief idea of what it is.

What is IoT?

Most of us are well aware of the internet nowadays.

If you are reading the blog, you must be consuming a generous dose of the internet every day.

In simple words, IoT is a concept of connecting any device, provided it has on/off switch to the internet & other connected devices.

The usage of smartphones via the internet is a very common concept nowadays.

Connecting things to the internet yields many amazing benefits. We’ve all seen these benefits with our smartphones, laptops, and tablets, but this is true for everything else too.

IoT is a wide concept. It comes in various forms both complicated & simple ones. Starting with smart microwaves, to automatic self-driving cars to wearable fitness devices that measure your heart rate and the number of steps you’ve taken that day.

The job of IoT can be categorized into three main concepts:

  •  Collecting information & sending it.
  • Receiving information and then acting on it.
  • Both of the tasks together.

Few IoT Devices:

Amazon Echo– This smart home hub is a speaker that can listen & follow commands, play music, read audiobooks, control lights, order an Uber & lots more!

Google Home– This is another popular smart device that can be connected to your home devices such as thermostat, lights, alarm, control volume & so on!

LG SmartThinQ – This one is a little different! It actually divides its SmartThinQ line of connected appliances into categories of kitchen (refrigerators), living room (washing machine, TV, Air Conditioners) & so on. It is obviously very convenient to use!

Bosch– Bosch manufactures sensors that can get into other IoT devices along with some home appliances. It also offers its own set of cloud platforms to build IoT applications.

The Influence Of IoT In Software & Business

From separate protocols which focus only on IoT, such as 6LoWPAN, MQTT, CoAP, etc. to embedded OS such as Tiny OS, Mantis, and Contiki to ensure an IoT device functions properly, software has seen a huge resurgence when it comes to employing IoT in the best possible way IoT is rapidly enabling smarter business operations and decisions, changing the business landscape as we know it. Microsoft using IoT to make its products more personalized, the applications are huge and groundbreaking.

Smart Home Devices

Influence of IoT in Smart Homes

Wouldn’t you love it if you could switch on the air conditioning before reaching home or switch off lights even after you have left home?

IoT has sensors that enable you to create & run a smart home. In fact, Google search says that Smart Home is one of the biggest search feature nowadays.

Just imagine, you wake up around 7 am in the morning to go to work by 9 am. But suppose, it is raining heavily, you have to drive slow. Or there is huge traffic. IoT will help to analyze everything & wake you up around 6.45 am.

Google Home, Amazon Echo, Alexa, LG SmartThinQ are few of the popular IoT devices you may have heard or even use in your home!

A connected or IoT-enabled alarm clock would reset itself based on all these factors, to ensure you got to work on time. Or you want to have a hot cup of coffee once you get back from the office. IoT system will help you to do that.

Social Media

Influence of IoT in Social Media

IoT offers a lot of convenient methods for social data aggregation for social media companies without affecting their time and energy.

By gathering valuable insights with the help of IoT-connected social media monitoring tools, businesses can make useful and crucial decisions. Even, Disney is using the Internet of Things technology to power its RFID-based MagicBands, to grant guests access to their parks, pay for purchases without carrying wallets, reserve rides, etc.

The makers of the app WeChat, are also working closely with IoT cloud provider Ayla Networks. They are trying to develop an operating system for smart interconnected devices, and explore how consumers can control their surroundings only with the help of the WeChat app. With the help of IoT, the world of social media has changed completely.

The Future

With the rise in the 5G net, the development of IoT will be incomparable. According to The Street,

“The faster, more-efficient 5G connection should support longer battery life for low-power hardware with 5G modems while maintaining the ability to handle mobile use cases serviced by 3G and 4G networks.”

The IoT, projected to grow to $1.7 trillion by 2020, is already developing as an integral part of 2016’s digital reality.

Tech industries across the board are preparing for an IoT breakthrough, specifically telecommunications companies. New 5G technology will reduce the power required to receive and transmit data, compared to 4G, while increasing network capacity.

The prospect of IoT is massive. And the most intelligent minds are working behind it to develop it much better.
